Not everyone knows, but Rennes is a city full of history. It is the capital of Brittany, the most separatist region of France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For centuries, Brittany struggled to escape the hands of France and Britain. They still speak Breton, the dialect of the region and all the signs are written in French and Breton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, during the time that Brittany was part of England, she carried out some very famous legends. One is that of the Escalibur Sword, in which the person who managed to draw the sword from the stone would be crowned the King of Brittany (and not of Great Britain!). And it is in Brittany that you can find Merlin, the famous sorcerer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Culinary level, huuuum! Brittany is the land of sweet and salted crepes, salted butter, cider, seafood, caramel with salted butter, buttery sweets (like Kouign Amann), and many others! It makes your mouth water just to think about it !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rennes is a small university town. This means that throughout the year, it is full of life, except in August, when students return home. And I went exactly in August!
I found a very peaceful Rennes and I was able to take advantage of what the city has to offer! I made a small itinerary to get to know the sights of the city!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to visit:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Halles Centrales (La Cri\u00e9e March\u00e9 Central) <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A beautiful covered market open every day. It's not huge, but there is already a lot to do to buy fresh produce!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Place de la R\u00e9publique<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Place de la Mairie\/ H\u00f4tel de Ville<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Built in 1720, the H\u00f4tel de Ville consists of three monuments, connected by the clock tower. In particular, it houses a Pantheon that honors the Rennais who died for France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Op\u00e9ra de Rennes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Located right in front of the H\u00f4tel de Ville, the smallest opera house in France, with less than 700 seats, it was briefly contested during its inauguration, due to its original shape. Book your tickets for a lyric opera, or take advantage of visits or rehearsals open to the public that take place several times a year, to discover this mandatory meeting point in the city of Rennes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rue du Chapitre<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Walk the streets behind the cathedral, around Rue du Chapitre. Quiet and lovely, they are home to beautiful buildings, as well as small shops and restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cath\u00e9drale Saint-Pierre de Rennes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

It is here, in the Saint-Pierre Cathedral, that the Dukes of Brittany were crowned for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portes Mordelaises<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

It is one of the only remnants of the city walls of Rennes. Dubbed royal gates for their role during the enthronement of the Dukes and Duchesses of Brittany, the Mordelaises Ports consist of two gates: a large one, used for the passage of vehicles, and a smaller one, which allows pedestrians to enter the city. Surrounded by two symmetrical towers and a drawbridge, the gates have long served as a defense system for the city of Rennes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Place des Lices<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Created in 1622, the Place des Lices market is the second largest market in France. Every Saturday, almost three hundred local producers come to sell fruits and vegetables, meats, cheeses, fresh fish, but also flowers. Try some oysters, try the famous galette-sausage, a local specialty. In the summer, musical groups accompany their purchases in this market to visit in Rennes for sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prison Saint-Michel<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Going to visit a prison, is it a good idea? Yes! Because now it houses bars and restaurants (yes, again, the Britons live well!). Go check it out anyway, it's cool!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rue Saint-Michel (or the thirsty street)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The most famous street in Rennes is The street for student walks. It has old buildings that look a little run down, but are being gradually renovated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Place Sainte-Anne<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Place Sainte-Anne is one of the central squares in the city. It has been under construction all the time due to the construction of a second metro line, but it is very beautiful, with its half-timbered houses all leaning over each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rennes also has some parks that are worth a visit!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Parc du Thabor<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This huge park won me over! It has waterfalls, rosaries, fountains, a chicken coop (yes!), trees and lots of space!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parc de Gayeulles<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Further away from the city center, this park is immense and deserves a whole day just to visit it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to eat:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

L’Epi de Bl\u00e9<\/a> – me prometa que voc\u00ea vai comer uma crepe nesse restaurante! A massa deles \u00e9 a melhor que eu comi na vida!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’Ambassade de Rennes<\/a> <\/strong>– os pratos sao generosos, deliciosos e o pre\u00e7o \u00e9 mais que justo! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Banque<\/a> - the pub inside the Saint Michel prison has a very cozy atmosphere!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Place Saint-Anne<\/a> - if you have any doubts, go there! The square has many bars and restaurants, and you can take a chance on any one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
